Classes begin for only middle school in District 38

It’s the end of summer for thousands of students attending schools in District 38, including the only middle school in the district, Lewis-Palmer.

The first day is full of scary moments, especially for seventh-graders like Zach Reyman, who is making his way through the halls for the first time.

Reyman said his worries were “being late and not knowing where my classes are.”

But educators say help is always there, and it’s what students like Jayden Kiley are looking forward to the most.

“I just want to help them in not feel alone because sometimes new school, different environment, but I know I was there,” Kiley said.

Some students, like Jackson Schroeder, are lucky enough to have their parents help them out.

“It’s kind of embarrassing, but not really — they’re here to support me in whatever I go through,” he said.

Going back to school isn’t only hard for students. Jackson’s mom, Carry Davis, is having a hard time saying goodbye, herself.

“It’s mixed emotions; it’s fun because they’re going back to school and they have some more structure again, but you know it’s sad to say goodbye to summer and start a new year and see them get older and grow up a little bit more. But it’s a good day,” Davis said.

As doors are closing for some students, others are opening, offering new and different experiences.

New this year to Lewis-Palmer Middle School is the option to hop on a laptop and take classes online.

“We only have three students. It’s a good way for us to kind of learn the ropes of what we need to know and how we need to plan for this and support the kids,” said Principal Seann O’Connor.

Whether or not students choose to attend school in the classroom or online, they are already setting goals.

“Don’t get on teacher’s nerves,” said eighth-grader Xavier Mcintire. “Do homework, basically, get it in on time, do work on time.”

Before they know it, the students hopping off the bus will soon be hopping back on as their first day comes to an end.

Lewis-Palmer Middle School isn’t the only school welcoming kids back Tuesday. Eight other schools in District 38 also started school, including the online program.
