10-year-old ejected, woman killed in crash near Monte Vista

A two-vehicle crash northeast of Monte Vista claimed the life of a 50-year-old woman and seriously injured a 10-year-old boy Monday evening.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, the crash happened at the intersection of two county roads a few miles north of Highway 285. ( MAP )

CSP says the driver of a Volkswagen Jetta, a 32-year-old woman, didn’t stop at a stop sign while going east on County Road 4N and crossing County Road 6E. A Toyota Tacoma was traveling south and was hit by the Jetta, which caused it to spin off the road and then roll over once before resting on its roof.

But while the driver of the Jetta wasn’t injured, the 50-year-old driver and the 10-year-old boy were both ejected from the Tacoma. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and the boy was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The boy’s current condition isn’t known.

The difference was that the driver of the Jetta was wearing a seat belt, while the two people in the Tacoma weren’t restrained, according to a crash report by CSP.

CSP hasn’t said anything about criminal charges, but drugs are suspected to be a factor, according to the report.
