Bridge leading into Midway Ranch flooded over, crews working to open both lanes

Some parts of El Paso County are still cleaning up after Friday’s thunderstorm. A bridge leading into Midway Ranch was flooded over, preventing people from getting home.

The area became susceptible to flash flooding after the Carson Midway Fire burned through the area destroying three homes back in March.

Rushing water came over the bridge along Boca Raton Heights Road. Scott Parker, supervisor for El Paso County Public Works said, “we actually had a tree that plugged up a culvert and we actually had sagebrush that ended up plugging up the inlet of our culverts.”

After the water receded, the road was limited to one lane through Saturday morning. Michael Seebeck, said, “literally a couple hundred feet wide of water floating across the road.”

He’s lived in Midway Ranch for nearly 20 years and said he’s never seen anything like it. “It’s part of the trials and tribulations that come with living out here. We take it on, we deal with it, we move forward and we keep on trucking,” he said.

Parker said crews were focusing on scooping the remaining water out of the area and then filling it with compacted dirt so they could reopen the road to two lanes. They’re hoping to have it re-open by Saturday evening or Sunday morning. The construction of the rest of the bridge could take a couple weeks.
