Another peacock at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo dies after hail storm

Katy Perry, one of Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s peacocks, has died after a powerful hail storm rocked Colorado Springs earlier this week.

The zoo confirmed the latest death Friday, bringing the death count to five. The zoo also lost another peacock, Snoop, as well as a Cape vulture named Motswari, a Muscovy duck named Daisy, and a meerkat pup that burrowed underground and was not recovered.

The storm dropped baseball-sized hail at the zoo and caused significant damage to four buildings, as well as hundreds of cars in the parking lot.

Several other animals remain injured and are being cared for.

The zoo is expected to reopen Saturday.

One more bird has died and a meerkat is still missing and is presumed dead after a powerful hailstorm pummeled a Colorado zoo.

Jenny Koch, a spokeswoman for Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs, tells The Gazette a peacock named Snoop died from injuries suffered in Monday’s hailstorm, and a meerkat pup that is believed to have burrowed underground hasn’t been found.

Koch said earlier this week that a 13-year-old rare Cape vulture named Motswari and a 4-year-old Muscovy duck named Daisy were killed. All of the other injured animals at the zoo are expected to recover.

The short but intense storm dropped baseball-size hail, injuring 14 people and damaging scores of vehicles. Koch says more than 100 disabled cars remain in the zoo’s main parking lot.

The zoo is expected to reopen Saturday.
