Man shoots self during standoff with Colorado Springs police

UPDATE: The man involved in a standoff with Colorado Springs police after shots were fired Tuesday shot himself in the head.

Police haven’t identified the man at this time, but an ambulance left the area near Villages of Springs Ranch around 4:45 p.m.

Officers were originally called to the apartment complex when gunshots were reported. A standoff ensued when the man continued to fire shots. Eventually, a SWAT team had to be called.

Police said the man had a history of psychological issues.

The area continued to be blocked off as of 5 p.m. while police continued investigating.

Colorado Springs police officers are responding to an incident after shots were fired in an apartment complex in the northeast side of the city.

CSPD advised residents in the area of the Villages of Springs Ranch to shelter in place. That’s near Peterson Rd., north of N. Carefree Cir.

Police are calling the scene a “tactical situation” and said shots continued to be fired as of about 2:05 p.m. It’s not clear if those shots were fired at CSPD officers.

Police didn’t say anybody else was in the home, but said at about 2:45 p.m. that the standoff was still ongoing.

Students at Springs Ranch elementary school will be released to their parents starting at 2:30 p.m., when Kindergarteners through second-graders will be released. At 3 p.m., the rest of the students will be released. Buses will arrive for students at the normal time, and bus riders will be kept safe inside until then.
