District 20 cancels classes Friday due to teacher rally

Academy District 20 announced that classes will be canceled Friday because of the anticipated teacher and staff absences due to the upcoming rally at the State Capitol for school funding.

D20 rolled out the announcement Tuesday, saying officials “now know there will be excessive levels of absences throughout our district.” That, combined with a limited amount of substitute teachers, means the district can’t ensure adequate supervision.

Education professionals from across the state are planning on gathering in Denver to protest low school funding. Several districts in the state have staged walkouts, and District 60 in Pueblo is in the midst of the formal process before an official strike.

District 20 said normal school operations will resume on Monday.
