Midway Ranch residents aren’t treating burn scar surrounding their homes

Three weeks after the Carson-Midway fire, homeowners are still surrounded by a burn scar. It’s a constant reminder their homes were narrowly untouched by the flames that scorched 3,300 acres.

Even though time has passed, landowners aren’t doing anything to treat their property, instead, they’re letting nature take its course.

Sprouts of green grass can already be seen among the burn scar. Rick Darnell, a 20 year resident of Midway Ranch says it’s a common technique farmers use to regrow vegetation on their property. He estimates “within a week or two, this will should be green if we get enough moisture.

A thin blanket of ice covered the area Saturday morning, adding to the moisture the land needs.

Darnell’s land wasn’t touched by the fire because his horses ate the brush before the fire started, but he’s watched as others have come through the area before.

Fort Carson is still accepting claims from people who lost property during the Carson-Midway fire. To file a claim, click here.
