One man is dead after being shot and killed by Pueblo police

One man is dead after a shooting involving Pueblo police Tuesday night.

Officers were responding to reports of a restraining order violation on East 9th Street on the city’s east side. It happened around 11 p.m.

When they got there, the suspect, who was later identified by the coroner as 55-year-old Steven Peters from Pueblo, had left on a bicycle. Police began searching the area for the suspect and found him near the corner of 9th Street and Lola Avenue.

Police said Peters reached for his waist. Officers tried to use a stun gun, but it failed, so they ran after him.

“They were yelling: gun, gun, gun, firearm, giving loud verbal commands for him to drop the weapon, but he just didn’t do it,” said Cpt. Kenny Rider, with the Pueblo Police Department.

Shortly after Peters refused to put the handgun down officers opened fire, killing him.

No officers were hurt in the shooting.

KRDO NewsChannel 13’s Stephanie Sierra spoke to Sovida Martinez who says she woke up to gunshots.

“I was trying to get my husband up, shaking him, but he wouldn’t wake up,” Martinez said.

Martinez said they were shooting down the alley behind her house.

“I heard about 7 or 8 gunshots,” she said. “It’s crazy, a lot goes through your head… hoping we’re not going to get shot up.”

This is Pueblo’s second shooting involving officers this year.
