Bulletproof backpacks on the rise in wake of school shooting

In the rash of school shootings across the nation, more companies are selling bulletproof backpacks.

The made-for-protection backpacks are selling out online and in stores in the wake of the Florida high school shooting last week.

Nick Barnett, a father of two high school aged children, says he wants to protect his kids and the expensive price tag is worth it.

“I guess that’s just the harsh reality of the world we live in today,” Barnett said.

Barnett says he and his girlfriend researched the idea after seeing a Youtube video of a backpack that actually stopped bullets.

According to ABC News, Central Spy Shop in Houston usually sells one or two bulletproof backpacks a month, but since Wednesday have sold out.

The backpack weighs less than 4 pounds and comes with a certification showing it was tested by an independent lab certified by the National Institute of Justice. The certification proves the backpack withstood a total of 10 shots from just over 8 feet from a 44 Magnum and 9 mm gun without penetration.

Central Spy Shop employee Tonnie Coleman says the backpack is not limited to having it on the back, but can easily be used in front of other parts of your body.

Barnett says you can’t put a price on your child’s life, you do what you can to protect them just like giving them a helmet when they ride a bike.
