Tips on protecting your pipes during winter

A big cold snap is just right around the corner, and Colorado Springs Utilities has some information on how to protect your pipes.

If you are someone who plans ahead and is dealing with inside pipes, for around $2, you can pick up a six-foot piece of pipe insulation at your favorite hardware store and wrap it around your pipes.

It is also suggested that you use caulk or insulation to seal leaks that could allow cold air in near indoor pipes.

For everyone else, here are some tips on how to prevent calling a plumber:

On extra cold days, open your kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors, especially if they are against an exterior wall. The air that heats your home will keep your pipes warm. In extreme temperatures, run a continuous stream of cold water, about the diameter of a pencil, from the faucet. Catch the water in a bucket and save for another purpose. If the pipe freezes, thaw it using a hairdryer. You can also heat water on the stove, soak towels in the hot water and wrap them around cold sections of the pipes. When thawing a pipe, start thawing it nearest to the faucet. Make sure the faucet is turned on so that melted water can drip out.

Also, don’t forget about your outdoor spigot. When exposed to the elements for a long period of time, it can sustain damage.

The best way to protect it from cold temperatures is to purchase insulated faucet covers. You can pick it up at any hardware store. It is made of Styrofoam and has padding on the bottom to prevent your stonework from getting scratched up.
