Porch pirate theft strikes again in Chipita Park

Six days away from Christmas and we continue to see new cases of porch pirate theft. The most recent target — a quiet community in Chipita Park.

The U.S. Postal Service in Cascade reports 13 cases of mail theft in the past three weeks.

“Everything was all ripped up,” said Pam Deramus.

Deramus said her mail was taken out and shredded along her driveway.

“They broke into it and took what they wanted,” she said. “It just drives me crazy.”

Her son, Quentin, lives up the road and had the same thing happen to him three times.

“They stole a package that was a Christmas present worth over 300 bucks,” he said. “The most frustrating part, is nothing seems to be done about it.”

So what can you do?

First — make sure to file a theft report with the Sheriff’s Office.

They will contact the postal service to make sure the package was delivered. Then detectives will follow up with a neighborhood canvas to see if there were any witnesses to the theft.

Keep in mind, if this is happening in your community — any information can help.

“Any additional information, may help solve another case,” said Natalie Sosa, with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

This theft is a federal crime, which means these thieves could face felony and misdemeanor charges depending on the value of the items stolen.
