Blood donations needed across the country in the wake of Harvey

Bonfils Blood Center says blood donations are needed in the wake of Tropical Storm Harvey. Donors across the country are being asked to give blood as soon as possible over the next several days.

Many blood drives have been canceled and donor centers closed in the affected areas. With more sustained rain forecasted, these cancellations and closures are likely to rise.

Bonfils says it needs the community’s help to ensure a safe and adequate supply not only for our community but for the communities impacted by this massive storm.

Type O blood donations are the most critically needed at this time, however, all blood types are welcome.

Bonfils urges both existing and first-time donors to make and keep appointments over the next several days and in the coming weeks.

Visit bonfils.org or call 800-365-0006 to schedule an appointment at one of eight donor centers including one at Austin Bluffs Parkway and North Academy Boulevard or at a mobile blood drive.

Walk-ins are welcome at any of those locations.

Individuals who are as young as 16 years of age (with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.
