House Resolution seeks to abolish Department of Education

In the wake of Betsey DeVos’ confirmation for Secretary of Education, a Kentucky lawmaker introduced a bill looking to abolish the Department of Education.

Republican Rep.e Thomas Massie introduced House Resolution 899, a one-sentence bill that states, “The Department of Education shall terminate on December 31, 2018.”

Massie doesn’t believe that Congress or the president has the constitutional authority to influence how and what children must learn.

A co-sponsor of the bill, Rep. Andy Briggs from Arizona, says, “Education of our students should lie primarily with parents, teachers, and state and local officials who know how to meet their individual needs best.”
