Multiple drivers rescued from vehicles stranded in flooded Colorado Springs intersections

Severe thunderstorms swept through Colorado Springs Monday, bringing feet of hail and flash flooding to neighborhoods just east of downtown.

Flash flood warnings that were issued for the city have expired, but warnings continued for areas east of town Monday evening.

Several roads and intersections across the city flooded, prompting water rescues at Airport and Circle, Constitution and Alpine, the 1000 block of Mt. Vernon Street, Platte and Tijuana, Hancock and Circle, Highway 115 and Star Ranch and on Las Vegas Street near the Criminal Justice Center.

The Colorado Springs Police Department went on accident alert because of the severe weather, but has since returned to normal operations.

Police say the following roads were closed because of the weather:

El Paso at Lover’s Lane
Canyon/Manitou Avenue
Platte and Boulder
Circle and Fountain
Mt. Vernon and Tweed

Additionally, Serpentine Drive in Manitou Springs was closed as a precaution.

The severe thunderstorm also brought large amounts of hail to some neighborhoods. In the neighborhood just south of Memorial Hospital Central, the hail stacked up two feet deep. Neighbors were seen using snow shovels to clear the hail and the city brought out snow plows.

You are reminded not to drive through flooded intersections. A car can float in as little as 6″ of water.
