Heroin epidemic and Narcan

democratic presidential debate touched on the heroin epidemic in this country. last night… candidates urged law enforcement agencies to get their hands on an antidote that save lives of overdose victims. k-r-d-o newschannel 13’s eric fink is live to explain how colorado springs and pueblo are ahead of the curve. it’s a national conversation and here in the southern colorado – police and fire doing their part to answer the call. lives are being lost and children are being orphaned. at the final democratic debate in south carolina before voting begins in iowa and new hampshire, hillary clinton talking about the heroin epidemic that’s spreading across the country including here. police officers must be equipped with the antedote to a heroin overdose known as narcan. they should be able to administer so should firefighters and others. firefighters in the springs say they’ve had it at their disposal for more than 30 years. in 2015 — c-s-f-d and paramedics responded to more than 100 heroin oversodes. now, the police department along with pueblo has its officers carrying the antedote on the streets. for us it’s benefit. a benefit to the communities, to the families, to the victims. it’s something we can carry, it’s something we can administer and it will reduce those overdoses. stand-up: the narcan is right here in this little vile. it’s administered as a nasal spray. all cspd officers were trained on how to use it last december in the field. they haven’t yet done so, but law enforcement it can save a life within seconds. el paso county commissioner sally clark says it’s an issue that goes beyond politics. this is really a public safety issue and it transcends any political party. it’s really a bipartisan effort to save lives. the el paso county sheriff’s office is currently training its deputies to use the potentially life-saving medicine. live in colorado springs, eric fink, k-r-d-o newschannel 13.
