Is Bennet unbeatable this fall?

A year and a half after he started his bid to take on Democratic incumbent Sen. Michael Bennet, Darryl Glenn is the winner of the GOP primary.

Now, the scene shifts to the general election, requiring broader appeal to a broader base.

Democrats say the choice is clear.

“Michael Bennet is a moderate who works across the aisle,” Pikes Peak Dems Chairwoman Kathleen Ricker said. “He’s a worker bee, he wants to get things done. Darryl Glenn is a far-right conservative who doesn’t believe in a woman’s right to abortion in even rape or incest.”

El Paso County Republican Party Chairman Jeff Hays knows it will be a challenge, but he also has seen Glenn shine in the underdog role.

“Darryl has a great ground game,” Hays said. “He’s got increasing name recognition. He has a great message that’s delivered very powerfully.”

Glenn has a lot of ground to make up in the money game. Hays admits the GOP may have a tough time matching Bennet’s cash.

KRDO political analyst Josh Dunn believes presumptive presidential nominee Donald Trump’s name at the top of the ticket could cost the GOP in other races.

“Republicans are worried he’s going to sink in the polls and candidates down the ballot will sink as a result,” Dunn said.

“There’s always a risk,” Hays said. “There’s also a risk that things turn around and he elevates the ticket.”

In a year that has defied all expectations, Democrats aren’t taking anything for granted.

“I don’t think anybody is unbeatable this year,” Ricker said. “We’re going to work hard.”

According to Bennet’s campaign, he has nearly $6 million cash on hand.

Bennet won his first full term in 2010 when he defeated Rep. Ken Buck by about 40,000 votes.
