Pueblo County students awarded first-ever marijuana funded scholarships

Pueblo County students received what officials say were the first-ever marijuana funded scholarships on Wednesday.

Students from various high schools gathered to be recognized at the Pueblo County Commissioners Meeting.

Each student who received the scholarship will be attending either Pueblo Community College or CSU Pueblo this coming fall.

The scholarships are completely funded by the excise tax on marijuana in Pueblo County.

Kendra Davenport went to Pueblo East High School and will attend CSU Pueblo in the fall to study elementary education. The scholarship will help her avoid taking out a ton of money in student loans.

“It would be a lot more difficult to go, I would have to take out more student loans and that kind of thing, so it’s very helpful,” said Davenport.

The fund is set to grow over the coming years, so that $1 million in scholarships will be awarded to Pueblo County students.
