Heat wave brings highs in 90s, triple digits to Colorado

A heat wave scorching much of the West sent temperatures in parts of Colorado soaring into the upper 90s and triple digits.

The high at Denver International Airport climbed to 98 degrees, one degree shy of the city record for June 21, while the all-time high in Colorado Springs was tied Tuesday at 101 degrees.

National Weather Service meteorologist Natalie Gusack tells The Denver Post a lack of clouds contributed to the toasty temperatures, but it’s expected to be cooler Wednesday.

Highs topped 100 in several Colorado towns, including 104 in Pueblo and 107 in Lamar.

In southwest Colorado, intense heat on Monday buckled a section of tracks used by the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in what the railroad industry calls a “sun kink.” The train was running on a regular schedule Tuesday.
