El Paso Co. health officials weigh in on Security-Widefield water

Just how harmful is water in the Fountain Valley area?

It’s a question on many people’s minds, in light of recent reports released about potential risks for high levels of chemicals discovered in the area.

KRDO NewsChannel 13 asked local health officials about the effects of perfluorinated compounds, which are found in the water.

Perfluorinated compounds or PFC’s are a man-made compound that’s commonly used in adhesive additives and firefighting foams. those additives are used in carpets, food wrappers, and pans,” said Tom Gonzales, El Paso Co. Public Health Deputy Director.

Gonazales says research on the materials is evolving. “What we do know from the literature is that PFC’s… If you’re exposed to them over a long period of time may have an effect on a developing fetus which may cause low birth rate.”

He recommends those who might be at risk find an alternate source of water. He also says the department is partnering with other authorities to find the best way to eliminate the chemicals.

“Right now we’re working with the EPA and bringing in centers for disease control, bringing in all the bright minds to determine what’s the best way to remove PFC’s, what are our options?”
