Two small wildfires burning in Fremont County

The Bureau of Land Management says it is assessing two small wildfires west of Caon City.

The fires are burning near the Spike Buck Recreation area, which is north of the Arkansas River between Caon City and Texas Creek.

Both fires were started by lightning and have burned 1/10 of an acre. The BLM says they are burning about a half mile apart.

The fires are burning in steep terrain, posing a potential safety hazard for firefighters.

“Firefighter and public safety is our number one concern when determining to engage a fire,” said Keith Berger, Royal Gorge Field Manager. “Due to poor access, difficult terrain and impending weather, no action will be taken on the firestoday.”

The fire will be monitored today. The situation will be reevaluated on Tuesday. It is hoped that rain that is in the forecast today might douse the flames.
