Vandalism at Ky. Veteran Memorial causes community outrage

A community in Kentucky was in shock over Memorial Day weekend after a portion of their Veteran Memorial was destroyed.

The Henderson Fire Department posted to Facebook on May 28 at around 7 a.m. the details of the investigation. According to the post, over 160 crosses had been crushed by someone, later identified as Anthony Burris, who had driven through the display some time through the night.

Henderson community members shared comments like:

“What a horrible thing for someone to do. Certainly hope those responsible are caught and punished.”

This act is ridiculous and ungodly. These crosses are there to represent the people who fought for our freedom and served our country and lost their lives. Please anyone with information contact the detective because they need to pay for their selflessact.

Several volunteers came together to try and repair the damage done by Burris. A GoFundMe was created by the Fire Department to raise money to help with making the memorial site whole again.

Surveillance footage was shared around noon on Saturday of the vehicle responsible, leading to Burris’ arrest a couple of hours later. The Henderson Police Department posted at around 2:20 p.m. stating that they had found the vehicle abandoned at a local McDonald’s with pieces of a cross and stake stuck in the tires.

Burris was found, arrested and charged with Criminal Mischief 1st Degree and Leaving the Scene of an Accident.
