UPDATE: Pueblo police plans to hand Kelsie Schelling case to CBI

Pueblo police said they are in the process of handing the Kelsie Schelling investigation over the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

Police Sgt. Ken Espinoza said one of the reasons for the possible takeover from CBI is there was an increase in other criminal investigations since 2013, which has led to less time being devoted to Schelling’s case.

“We’ve done everything absolutely possible that we could do with it,” he said.

The head of investigations at Pueblo police, Deputy Chief Andy McLachlan, retired Friday. He was involved in the Schelling case since the beginning.

This comes as national attention will be focused on Pueblo Friday night with the Kelsie Schelling case.

ABC’s 20/20 obtained Pueblo police interviews with Schelling’s former boyfriend Donte Lucas. In the interviews, Lucas told police Schelling asked him to drive her to Parkview Medical Center. Then the two parted ways at Walmart.

But Parkview said there is no record of Schelling ever checking into the hospital.

When confronted by police, Lucas said he didn’t know what to say or how to answer.

Former FBI agent and ABC News analyst Brad Garrett said police should have corned Lucas at that point. Instead, investigators asked an unrelated question and Lucas asked for a lawyer.

This all started in Feb. 2013 when Schelling drove to Pueblo to tell her boyfriend, Donthe Lucas, that she was pregnant. She was last seen at the South Side Wal Mart. Police said ten days later, her car was moved from Wal Mart to St. Mary Corwin Medical Center.
