Local woman celebrates 103rd birthday

A milestone for a woman who has spent the past 103 years living in Colorado Springs. It’s a birthday unlike any other for the staff at Brookdale Briargate living facility

Doris Hiatt turned 103 years old on Monday. She was born, raised and has lived in Colorado Springs her entire life.

“Can you tell them how old you are? Say you’re 103 years old,” asked Hiatt’s daughter.

“Is that how old I am?” Hiatt joked.

Age is one of many of Hiatt’s accomplishments.

“She was a rancher’s wife. She cooked at a summer camp. She drove a school bus. She had a lot of different talents,” said Ellen Barhalla, Hiatt’s daughter.

Talents like ranching is one of the things that Hiatt’s family credits to her long life.

“She’s always been active. She has always walked all her life, taking long walks on the ranch,” said Susan McDaniel, daughter.

Hiatt lived on her ranch until she was 99 years old. She recently moved to Brookdale Briargate assisted living center.

“Normally they are about 99 or 100 years old, but not 103. That’s a big jump,” said Sandy OConnell, activities director at Brookdale Briargate.

“She’s obviously got good genes. We never dreamed in a lifetime we would reach this stage in her life, but we’re sure happy we have,” said McDaniel.

The birthday celebration was an exciting moment for the mother, rancher, school teacher, and 103-year-old colorado native.

“Thanks for coming everybody,” said Hiatt.

Hiatt has four children and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
