Going to the moon?

How would you like to take a selfie from space? Or vacation at Club Med on the moon? The possibility isn’t as farfetched as it once was.

KRDO NewsChannel13’s Mike Everett spoke with George Whitesides, the CEO of Virgin Galactic, about it Wednesday

Since 2004 Virgin Galactic, has been working to make commercial space flight a reality. Whitesides says the chances of visiting a “Club Med” in space could evolve in levels.

“So the first one we’re gonna offer is going to be a journey into space. It’ll be a suborbital journey, it’ll take a couple of hours, and it’ll be widely available within 10 years, say,” Whitesides said.

And the demand is there. About 700 people are signed up to go into space. The ticket price: $250,000.

He says the second part would be a trip to something like a space station.

But what about a stay on the moon? Whitesides says yes – just not tomorrow.

“Maybe by the… by a few more decades or something, that will become a lot more commonplace, but that’s a bit further off,” he said.

Now that that we’re looking at the possibility of actually going into space as a tourist, the question is: Would you try it? Seventeen-year old John Churchill has no doubts.

“Yes, without a second thought really. I know that Virgin Galactic has had some issues, “Churchill said. “But honestly the experience of being in space, many astronauts have described as being like no other.”

So if you don’t want to do all that training and studying – save your money. Perhaps you can just buy a ticket.

A panelist at Wednesday’s event said there are currently 18,000 applications available for 24 astronaut positions.
