Hit-and-run suspect caught thanks to witness, one woman hospitalized

A woman was taken to the hospital early Sunday morning after being hit by a car while crossing the road.

It happened after 2 a.m. near the intersection of Kiowa and Tejon Street in downtown Colorado Springs.

Springs police say a Mercedes left the scene after running over the woman. Right now, drugs and alcohol are a suspected factor in the investigation.

The victim has serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Police say they were able to apprehend the suspect, Andrea Martinez, quickly after the accident thanks to the watchful eye of a witness.

KRDO NewsChannel 13 spoke with that witness, who did not want to be identified by name.

“I was able to follow the vehicle and keep it in view the whole time. I even told the lady, ‘You just ran over someone back there,’ and she’s telling me, ‘No I didn’t, no I didn’t.’ And she took off while I was on the phone with 911 trying to get them there,” the witness said.

Police say they are grateful for the assistance provided by the witness.
