911 Award goes to local boy

A 7-year-old boy helped save his family after a fire, and was recognized Saturday for his efforts.

Sheriff Bill Elder awarded Lucas Heuberger the 911 Hero Award in front of family and first responders Saturday afternoon.

Lucas saved his family and their home after he woke up on Jan. 5 and noticed his LED picture frame was on fire.

He told his mom about the fire and they were able to get out unharmed.

On Saturday afternoon he was honored by Tri County Fire Department and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

“Looking at the mattress where the fire caught, the fire definitely would have turned out very differently had young Lucas not taken the actions he had taken,” said Mike Tipton, a firefighter with Tri County.

Lucas’s mom said she is very proud of him, and he even caught the fire before the smoke detectors did.
