Well-known area priest, pro-life activist dies after long illness

Diocese of Colorado Springs priest and pro-life activist Father Bill Carmody died Tuesday, after a long battle with cancer.

Father Carmody, 58, was the pastor of St. Dominic Catholic Church. He also led the Diocese’s Respect Life Office and Project Rachel, a program to help those suffering after an abortion.

“He dedicated himself tirelesly to the pro-life effort,” Bishop Michael Sheridan said. “He is known nationally for his work.”

Father Carmody celebrated mass outside Planned Parenthood every week from May 1994 until November 2015. And he often spoke up for the pro-life efforts at the state Capitol.

“He was non-stop and he was a great inspiration to anyone who knew him,” Bishop Sheridan said.

Bishop Sheridan said even as they mourn, many will remember Father Carmody’s legacy

“We’re confident God will reward him for his good work,” he said.

A vigil service will take place March 4 at 7 p.m. at St. Dominic Church, 5354 S. Highway 85/87 in Security. Mass of Christian Burial is currently scheduled for March 5 at 10 a.m. at St. Dominic, with Bishop Michael Sheridan presiding.
