Cars slide on southern Colorado roads

You didn’t have to look far to find cars off the side of the road.

When the heaviest bands of snow hit Monday afternoon, cars started sliding and getting stuck.

“There was no way I was gonna be able to stop,” said AJ Gonzalez, who was traveling on Moreno Drive Monday when he lost control and nearly hit a power pole. “I just braced myself for it, kind of hit the curb good and bent my rim.”

He called a tow company, but eight hours later his car was still on the side of the road. His story was similar to several across southern Colorado, which is some people took a different approach.

“Snowy day out, didn’t want to drive and might as well make the best of the situation,” said Gus Griffin, who used skis to get around. “Everyone in the car is probably looking like, ‘that dude is crazy’ but it’s safer than the car.”

He used his skis for about six miles Monday to get to and from work.

‘It’s just three miles each way, so it’s not too bad,” Griffin said.

Gonzalez admits he learned the hard way that this storm wasn’t worth driving through.

“It could’ve been worse. If you don’t have to drive I would not drive out here right now,” he said.

Law enforcement urge drivers to avoid driving during the storm.
