Pueblo city councilors discuss removing chief

Some Pueblo City Council members are talking about replacing Police Chief Luis Velez.

Councilwoman Lori Winner brought up the idea at an executive session on Monday night.

But since Velez doesn’t work for the council, members will hold a work session this Monday in order to address Velez.

“Council would have a chance to talk to the chief about the outcome of that, what he’s planning on doing, why does he feel like he does not have the backing of a lot of the police officers,” said Council President Steve Nawrocki.

This comes after a survey of police union members in December revealed close to 95 percent have little confidence in their chief.
