Man dies after being hit by train in Colorado Springs

The Colorado Springs Fire Department says a man died after being hit by a train on the city’s south side Wednesday.

The Fire Department says the incident happened on the tracks in the 3300 block of E. Las Vegas Street, not far from the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center.

The victim is described as a male, around 30 years old.

The train’s engineer reported the incident. Firefighters say the man was dead when they arrived.

An investigation is underway. Colorado Springs police, the coroner’s office and representatives from the railroad are all taking part in the investigation.

This is the same general location where similar incidents have happened in the past.

In October 2014, a woman was killed near the same location when she was trapped between two train cars and died on scene. Investigators ruled her death an industrial accident. In June of 2014, a man was hit by a train near this same area and faced serious injuries but survived.

Colorado Springs police say this has been a problematic area for years.

“There is close access to some shopping centers near Astrozon. So, it’s not uncommon to have pedestrians in this section of the railway. It is trespassing, so it’s not recommended, obviously,” said Sgt. Joe Frabbiele with Colorado Springs Police Department
