Volunteer fire department concerned about pot grows in its area

A volunteer fire department is concerned about how it would handle emergencies at pot grows in western Pueblo County.

The Red Creek Volunteer Fire and Rescue team said one of its concerns is in the Siloam Road area, the same place where neighbors were concerned about the amount of pot grows in the area and the legality of them.

The volunteer team said it’s limited on equipment to handle a fire at pot grow facilities in its area it monitors.

Pueblo County Community Information Officer Paris Carmichael said safety is the county’s No. 1 priority and the county is confident that the licensed facilities are safe.

“The county completely understands the fire district’s concerns and that’s why we 100 percent support the license system we have in place right now,” she said.

The licensing process includes a fire inspection that ensures the facilities are up to code.

The Red Creek fire chief said he wouldn’t speak with us on camera until he meets with the county.

We also tried contacting the marijuana grow owners in the Red Creek fire district area. We are waiting to hear back from them.
