Sanders talks gun control during Boulder visit

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is calling for an assault weapon ban in the wake of the latest college shootings.

During a rally Saturday in Boulder, Colorado, Sanders mentioned the two shootings on college campuses that had occurred the day before as well as last week’s attack at a community college in Oregon. He called for greater mental health measures, universal background checks and the assault weapon ban.

Sanders is running for the Democratic presidential nomination. He has occasionally parted from party orthodoxy on gun control and the issue is a potential weakness for him as he heads to Las Vegas for the initial Democratic presidential debate next week. He made similar comments on guns Friday in Tucson.
