Two people distract Colorado Springs woman; steal $14k in jewelry

Colorado Springs Police are looking for two people who stole $14,000 worth of jewelry from a woman.

Police said it happened Monday night in the 2300 block of Montebello Drive West.

Hilde, who asked for her last name to be anonymous says the man came to her door saying they were with the “Colorado Springs Water Department.”

“I saw it was someone who worked with the water property with a blue uniform and then he showed me the paper,” said Hilde.

Hilde allowed the man into her home. He then was on the phone while working with pipes and a water heater.

“Then we went downstairs and he turned on the washing machine. I don’t know why,” said Hilde.

He left 20 minutes later, police said.

Hilde went back to her bedroom after he left and found more than $14,000 worth of jewelry missing.

“It was five necklaces, the nice ones the big ones,” said Hilde.

She told officers she saw a vehicle outside of the home leave when the man went inside and she saw it back outside the home when the man left.

“No matter how good they look, call the company and don’t let them in. You shouldn’t open the door for anyone,” said Hilde.

Police said they believe a second person went in the home while the man distracted the victim in the basement.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 444-7000 or Crime Stoppers at 634-7867.
