Sales tax revenue rise could lead to more city government jobs in Pueblo

Pueblo saw a sharp rise in sales tax revenue this summer and that could translate into crucial job openings.

Through July, sales tax revenue is up 7 percent compared to the same time last year.

City Manager Sam Azad said this is because of a lower employment rate and cheaper gas prices.

He said he is cautiously optimistic about the trend, but if it continues; there could be more jobs for the city’s police, fire, law and finance departments.

“That by itself is good news, in the past; we were just looking at cutting positions,” he said.

The Daily Grind Caf has helped contribute to the rise in sales tax revenue.

Owner Charles Sole said it has been a busy summer.

“We haven’t had a slow down at all this summer; sales have been higher than they are last summer,” he said.

The sales tax in Pueblo is 3.5 percent.
