Firefighters hike Manitou Incline to honor fallen heroes

Local firefighters are honoring first responders who died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Firefighters from Peterson Air Force Base and Manitou Springs Fire Department hiked the Manitou Incline in full turnout gear Thursday morning.

“For us, it’s not just another day,” said firefighter Michael Alvarado. “This is just our way of memorializing the ones who sacrificed their lives and to pay tribute to the families.”

Carrying nearly 60 pounds of gear, firefighters took turns carrying oxygen tanks and an American flag as they climbed the mountain.

“First responders responded to the terrorists attacks just like the way we are. They had full gear,” Alvarado said.

Friday marks 14 years since the Sept. 11 attacks. Local firefighters said they will never forget their fellow first responders who died.

“They made a sacrifice. They thought they were going to come home and they didn’t com home,” said firefighter R.J. Gerry. “We get to go home, so we carry on the tradition for them.”

More than 300 firefighters were killed during the Sept. 11 attacks. Local firefighters said they are thankful for those who didn’t hesitate to do their job and help save lives.
