Arrests made in southern Colorado town drug raid

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says arrests were made during a drug raid in the Cotopaxi area Tuesday.

A spokesman tells KRDO NewsChannel 13 that he cannot say how many people were arrested, but that more details will be released on Thursday.

The spokesman says he doesn’t know what prompted the raid but that it has been in the works for a long time. Neighbors say they saw it coming.

“I was scared, I mean there was DEA agents in our yard, people in army suits with binoculars. They had hazmat suits on,” said Nicole Dean.

Neighbors say at least three homes were raided. Dean lives just a few houses down from one of the homes raided, she says she’s seen suspicious activity for months.

“Since we moved in, in January, we smelt marijuana and I know he had just built a building,” said Dean.

Another neighbor says he knew the owner of one of the raided homes.

“I was told last night from the person who actually owns the property that 109 plants came out of that house yesterday and the other house raided was 48. Apparently those people were related, they were brothers,” said Antonio Mayers.

Authorities cannot confirm what types of drugs were seized, but in Colorado if you’re 21 you’re only allowed to legally grow up to six marijuana plants.

“Oh I definitely think they were growing more, you could really smell it up there.” said Dean.

Once the documents are released, we should know who was arrested and what drugs were seized.

This year alone, the DEA has assisted in at least a dozen raids in Colorado.
