Shooting suspect arrested in Pueblo West

Pueblo police arrested a man who they believe is responsible for wounding another man on the city’s south side Monday afternoon.

Trevon Harrison, 21, faces a second-degree attempted murder charge.

The victim, identified as Albert Cadena, 35, was last reported to be in stable condition after being shot in the leg and stomach.

Police say they quickly identified a possible suspect vehicle in the investigation and tracked Harrison to Pueblo West. Harrison was taken in for questioning and then arrested.

According to Harrison’s arrest affidavit, witnesses say the shooting occurred after Cadena threw up gang signs.

The shooting happened at the intersection of Sprague Ave. and Prairie Ave. at around 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Investigators said the shooting may be gang or drug related, or possibly both.

Only one Pueblo police officer is strictly assigned to the department’s gang unit. Sgt. Eric Gonzales told KRDO NewsChannel 13 that more officers used to be assigned to the unit, but budget cuts have trimmed that staff to one.

“The gang violence needs to be fought on a level that’s not just the police department,” Gonzales said. “We need the public’s assistance.”

There have been at least 13 gang-related shootings since May.

Gonzales added that a shortage of officers and a lack of cooperation from victims make it difficult to investigate.

“It’s only by information that we receive from witnesses that we’re going to be able to solve these things and to get some of these people off the streets,” he said.
