Encouraging older bus riders

A relatively new program by two local agencies is designed to make senior citizens more confident in riding city buses.

The Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments and Mountain Metro Transit have trained volunteers who work as “senior ambassadors” to talk with older riders about how to understand schedules and determine the best routes.

“Senior citizens often rely on public transportation to get to medical appointments, buy groceries, etc.,” Rachel Beck of the PPACG said. “Especially those who are on a fixed income.”

Two riders accompanied an ambassador Tuesday on a short bus ride to Old Colorado City. One of them was Shirley Mercil, 73.

“I’m learning about riding the bus in case my car breaks down one day,” she said. “I do like driving, but sometimes it’s nice to sit and relax and not have to watch the road.”

PPACG hopes more people will participate in the program.
