Rescuers called to Mt. Bierstadt for lightning injuries

Rescuers have been called to Mount Bierstadt about 40 miles west of Denver on a report of a lightning strike that left several people injured.

Taneil Ilano, spokesman for the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, told KMGH-TV that officials were told a number of people had been hit, but there were no fatalities reported.

Dawn Wilson, spokeswoman for the Alpine Rescue Team, said about 30 rescuers were called out Sunday by the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office. She said an unknown number of persons were reported injured.

Mount Bierstadt is a popular mountain for hikers because of easy access.

Lightning and hail also forced delays during The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb auto and motorcycle race near Colorado Springs after weather forecasters urged spectators to get into their cars.
