Monument veteran receives new house

one southern colorado veteran. army sergeant matthew spang was injured in afghanistan. he was honored today with a set of keys to a brand new, mortgage- free house in monument. new at five… krdo newschannel 13’s zach pagano was there for the special housewarming event. this is the first of many trips down the driveway for sergeant matthew spang and his family. behind this door a brand new home for the army veteran. spang was injured during his second tour of duty in afhganistan. he lost both of his legs below the knees. now that he’s back home… he has a new place to call home. it’s nice to get my house and show my family and my kids, see all the smiles on their faces. a group called homes for our troops builds houses like this one to help wounded veterans rebuild their lives. this house is built with mobility in mind. he can put a lot of his spices and products that he would need, just pull this down, pop it up and it’s out of the way and he can cook. it’s going to make it a lot easier especially with the pull down shelf. 00:59 if i’m in my wheelchair i can pull the cabinet down out of the top shelf. it’s a lot more accessible, i can move around a lot easier. homes for our troops doesn’t see the project as charity. it’s a moral obligation of our society to take care of those men and women who sacrificed so much. and if home is where the heart is… this has just been a true blessing that they’ve donated this house to me and i just can’t help but smile. there is plenty of room under this roof for friends and family. in monument, zach pagano, krdo newschannel 13. sergeant spang says he’s looking forward to hosting thanksgiving and christmas dinner at his new house. homes for our troops has built nearly 200 homes for injured veterans nationwide. a transitional
