Residents watch for rock slides with more rain coming

With heavy rain in Thursday’s forecast, CDOT will watch Highway 24 closely.

While mitigation efforts have reduced the risk of rock slides, one big rock is getting a lot of attention just east of Cascade.

“I drove by and caught it out of the glimpse of my eye,” said Karst Bergsma.

The rock slid down weeks ago, but many have stopped to see it in person. Some have even taken pictures with it. Crews have been laying down sediment and debris in front of the boulder trying to keep it secure.

If you think this is the only trouble spot behind Highway 24, you’re mistaken.

Fern Gulch, on the other side of Highway 24, is also a concern. Some nearby residents have sandbagged their drives to keep any sediment or water away and one man who lives nearby said it turns into a waterfall every time it rains.

CDOT says Fern Gulch is a top concern and workers will likely watch the highway at various points for any problems tomorrow.
