Increase in insurance claims

A few weeks of heavy rain kept insurance companies busy.

Several homeowners in Colorado Springs are dealing with flooded basements. Insurance companies say they have been dealing with an overwhelming amount of calls.

They want to remind homeowners that flood coverage is not standard on home insurance. You can set up a separate policy through the national flood insurance program.

“We have had more calls this year than probably any of the past years that I can think of just because of the amount of rain that we’ve had and the amount that’s been seeping through basements,” said insurance adviser Robert Edgin.

For help, contact your local insurance agent. On average, flood insurance costs $200 to $400 a year.
