New stamp celebrates Special Olympics competition

The U.S. Postal Service unveiled a new stamp to celebrate the athletes competing in the 2015 Special Olympics World Games.

A dedication ceremony for the Special Olympics World Games Forever Stamp was held at the U.S. Postal Service station in downtown Colorado Springs on Wednesday morning. Three Colorado athletes competing in the 2015 Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles helped introduce the stamp.

“It’s pretty awesome,” Chris McElroy told KRDO NewsChannel 13. “It’s really awesome to have that stamp going all over the country.”

The stamp features the 2015 Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles logo which showcases the colors of flags from 177 participating countries.

“It really helps show everyone that Colorado is proud, that our athletes are incredibly talented and amazing people and we’re all out to celebrate their achievements,” said Mindy Watrous, president and CEO of Special Olympics Colorado.

The stamp is a forever stamp, meaning it can always be used for first class mail regardless of the going postal rate.

The Special Olympics World Games will be held in Los Angeles from July 25 – Aug. 2.

The Unified Relay Across America will be making its way through Southern Colorado on June 25-26. Participants can carry the Flame of Hope that will be lit in Athens, Greece and delivered in a hand-to-hand exchange through all 50 states over 46 days to Los Angeles for the competition.
