Red Rock Canyon Open Space Still Closed

The seemingly endless rain throughout southern Colorado has shut down one of Colorado Springs most popular recreation areas.

Red Rock Canyon Open Space closed last week due to debris flows and flooding.

“It really is a mess, mud, washed out trails, erosion. It’s probably the worst of all cases,” said Colorado Springs Park Operations and Development Manager Kurt Schroeder.

The city hopes to open the park in intervals once areas are deemed safe.

“We know people are just dying to get back in it’s one of their favorite parks and it always gets tons of use,” said Schroeder. “We just need the time to evaluate and then take the appropriate steps to make sure it’s safe.”

Crews at this time do not have an estimate on when the recreational area may open.
