Investigators: 2 dead after shootings in La Plata County

The La Planta County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a pair of fatal shootings near Ignacio. They happened Tuesday (4/14) morning.

According to investigators, 33 year old Joel Ferguson shot 27 year old Jake Bramwell several times during an altercation at Bramwell’s home at the Sky Ute Downs RV Park. Bramwell was pronounced dead at the scene. Ferguson fled the scene immediately after the shooting.

About 15 minutes later, a Bayfield Marshal officer tried to pull Ferguson over in the 5700 block of La Plata County Road 523. Investigators say he pulled over, got out of his truck and shot himself. He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.

Autopsies are being performed on both men.

Investigators say the men knew each other and the shooting was the result of a disagreement between the two.
