Fetal homicide bill introduced at state capitol

A month after a brutal attack on a pregnant woman in Longmont, a Colorado Springs lawmaker introduced a fetal homicide bill Tuesday.

State senator Bill Cadman discussed the bill last month following the attack on Michelle Wilkins. Investigators say Dynel Lane lured Wilkins to her home through a Craigslist ad for baby clothes. Then Lane stabbed Wilkins and removed her unborn baby.

Senate bill 15-268 would define an unborn baby as a person in homicide and assault cases. But it would not apply to an act committed by the mother or a medical procedure done by a medical professional with the mother’s consent.

The bill will begin in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
