UPDATE: Fire burning near Fort Carson fully contained

A fire burning near Fort Carson and the Pikes Peak International Raceway, south of Colorado Springs is fully contained.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said the fire has burned about 117 acres. It started just before 3 p.m. Sunday.

Neighbors living near the area gathered on a dirt road overlooking the fire to watch firefighters progress.

I was definitely, definitely scared. Not so much scared for the house, scared of it picking up because the wind up here,” said Aaron Bosinski.

“When you see smoke you get concerned. Being out here with all this brush and all these houses surrounded by brush, obviously we get worried,” said Jeff Lewis.

People who live nearby tell KRDO Newschannel 13 that the area is used as a makeshift shooting range. They said they think an explosive target for firearms practice was to blame.

“We all like to shoot but when it comes to being irresponsible and not being accountable for your actions and then taking off, we don’t want that around our kids and our families,” said Lewis.

Incident commander Kevin Junglen with Hanover Fire Department said investigators are looking into explosive targets as a possible cause but hadn’t made an announcement of what they believe started it.

“There is some shooting that has gone on down there and that’s what we are looking into to see if it had something to do with that but we can’t answer that right now until investigators finish,” said Junglen.

No structures were threatened and no one was injured, the sheriff’s office said.

More than a dozen agencies responded to the fire.
