Red light camera ban has been a hot topic in the Colorado Capitol

The debate is heating up regarding red light cameras in the Colorado Legislature.

Pueblo City Council President Steve Nawrocki said, as long as there isn’t a ban on the cameras, the cameras will always have the green light in the city.

Earlier this week, the Littleton City Council decided to stop its red light camera program because it wasn’t making enough money from traffic tickets. It has been declining since the cameras were first installed in 2009.

Nawrocki said the cameras are more for safety rather than money in Pueblo.

“We’ve had a lower rate of accidents in a couple of the intersections. I think that in itself could have saved lives. It certainly has saved property costs,” he said.

There are cameras in three intersections in the city.

There is a bill going through the Colorado Legislature to ban red light cameras. A House committee has already passed it.
