Residents want special prosecutor in police shooting of teen

A day after Denver police shot and killed a 16-year-old girl in a stolen car, some residents are calling for a special prosecutor to investigate the officers who opened fire.

They plan to rally outside the office of District Attorney Mitch Morrissey on Tuesday morning. Morrissey normally investigates police shootings, but some residents don’t believe it would be a fair inquiry.

Police shot the girl, identified by friends as Jessica Hernandez, on Monday morning after they say she struck and injured an officer in a stolen car.

Authorities have released few other details about the shooting in an alley in a residential, middle-class neighborhood.

Several dozen people with candles and protest signs gathered Monday night near the site of the shooting to remember Jessica and demand answers about the deadly encounter.
