Caon City Officer who shot and killed man identified

The Caon City Police Department has released the identity of an officer who said he was forced to shoot and kill a man Thursday (12/11/14).

Police say Corporal Charles Stage shot Brandon Atencio, 28. A preliminary report from the coroner says that Atencio died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Officers were called to the 2000 block of E. Main St. just before 9 a.m. on a report of a man with a knife making threats. The man was not there when officers arrived.

Police officers began searching the area. They found the man, later identified as Atencio, on N. Orchard Ave. Police said that the officers chased Atencio on foot briefly before he turned around and charged at the officers while making “threatening gestures.” Police said Atencio was armed with a box cutter. It was at this time that Cpl. Stage shot Atencio.

At a news conference Friday, police said that Atencio was on parole for felony assault on a police officer in Teller County. They said Atencio served time in prison for armed robbery in Nebraska and that Atencio was a suspect in a robbery at the Western Convenience in Caon City Tuesday night.

“I couldn’t believe when we were driving up, everything was taped off,” said Ken McQueen, whose yard Atencio was shot in.

“I would have never dreamed that that would take place in Caon City,” McQueen said.

This is the second time in less than a week that Caon City Police have shot a man.

Hudson Taylor Clark, 32, was shot by a Caon City officer Saturday afternoon. Police said Clark stabbed Cpl. Andrew Sanders. Clark was accused of stealing a 9 millimeter gun and a holster from a local business earlier in the day.

The second shooting has left some in the area nervous.

“It makes you nervous because it was so close to home,” said Belinda Avdek, who lives down the street. “We have a lot of foot traffic on the road right now and you don’t know what people are walking around that late at night.”

“It’s kind of scary that it’s happening in your area. Especially where you live,” said Dustin Perigen.
